THE THINKING BEHIND PENSER

penser [pɑ̃se], French verb: to think, to conceive, to think through.
Think clearly. Create movement.
Penser helps organisations navigate complex change by connecting strategy, communication, behaviour and organisational context.
Founded by Peter Davison in 2017, Penser draws on more than 20 years' experience across advertising, brand, corporate communications, government and design.
The practice has evolved from a design-led communications consultancy into a strategic practice focused on a bigger question:
What needs to happen for people to understand, align and act?
The penser perspective
Communication should lead somewhere.
Communication is often measured by what gets produced and distributed.
Penser is more interested in what happens as a result.
Do people understand?
Do they trust the direction?
Do they know what is expected?
Can they act?
Does the change become embedded?
Understanding. Alignment. Behaviour. Adoption. Outcomes.
That means looking beyond the message to the people, context and conditions that influence whether change actually takes hold.
Behaviour
What makes people act?
People do not change simply because they have been given information.
They need the capability, opportunity and motivation to act.
Penser draws on behavioural science to understand the conditions that influence behaviour and to identify what needs to change for communication and engagement to have an impact.
Capability
Do people have the knowledge, skills and confidence?
Opportunity
Do the systems and environment support the desired behaviour?
Motivation
Do people have a reason to act?
Adoption
How does change become behaviour?
Awareness is only the beginning.
Successful adoption requires people to understand why change is necessary, see what it means for them, develop the capability to act and receive the reinforcement needed to sustain new behaviours.
Penser uses established change and adoption thinking to help organisations move from communication to action.
Awareness → Desire → Knowledge → Ability → Reinforcement
Organisational change
People change within systems.
Leadership, culture, processes, technology and organisational momentum all influence whether change succeeds.
Communication is most effective when it is connected to the wider change effort.
Penser therefore considers communication as part of the change system, not as a separate activity.
Measurement
Measure what changed.
The question is not simply:
Did we communicate?
It is:
Did communication contribute to the outcome?
Penser connects communication activity with understanding, attitudes, behaviour and organisational outcomes.
Understanding → Attitudes → Behaviour → Outcomes
AI and the future of work
AI transformation is a human challenge.
Technology can be deployed quickly. Changing how people work takes longer.
Successful adoption requires more than tools and governance. People need clarity, capability and confidence around how AI will affect their work.
Penser brings communication, behavioural thinking and change practice together to help organisations navigate that transition.
